Tráfico y tenencia ilegal del perico caretirrojo (Psittacara erythrogenys) en la ciudad de Piñas, provincia de El Oro, Ecuador

Currently illegal wildlife trafficking is the third most lucrative type of illicit business in the world, after arms smuggling and drug trafficking. This paper analyzes the trafficking and illegal possession of the Red-fronted Parakeet (Psittacara erythrogenys) as the main pressures that threaten the populations of this species in study area. A total of 369 surveys were applied to the inhabitants of the Piñas county, to determine the most important causes that influence this illegal activity and through the Conservation Action Planning (PCA, for its acronym in Spanish) methodology, pressures were evaluated and conservation strategies were proposed. The results shows that P. erythrogenys is the most commercialized parrot in the area, most of the people who got it believe that they are attractive, there is accessibility in terms of sale prices, part of the parakeets that are sold as pets are extracted from their natural habitat and most consider it acceptable to keep it as a pet. As a result of the application of the PCA methodology, seven strategies are proposed which have been validated by local and national experts contributing to the conservation of the parakeet, being the awareness and management being their main axes. The development of these strategies contributes to increasing the viability of the conservation object and public participation in the implementation of biodiversity conservation policies.
