Riassunto: | The objective of the present study was to determine the morphophysiological characteristics of the digestive tract of the guinea pig and what is the impact of suppressing cecotrophy in the functioning of the digestive tract. For this purpose two treatments were defined (T1) the cuyes performed the cecotrophy; (T2) cecotrophy was suppressed for two consecutive days. Eight male guinea pigs Type A1 of 2.5 months of age with an average weight of 865 ± 83 g per treatment were used. The variables under study were absolute and relative weights of digestive organs with contents and voids, absolute and relative lengths of digestive organs and pH of the stomach and the cecum. Treatments were compared using an analysis of variance. The cuyes showed the following absolute and relative mean weights, of the stomach 20.0 g (2.01% PV) and the weight of the blind 53.2 g (5.52% PV). The mean length of the small intestine in the cuyes studied was 390 cm of the total digestive tract, 7 cm of stomach, 233 cm of the small intestine, 12 cm of the cecum. Selections of meat animals have produced an increase in the small intestine and a reduction in the length and weight of the cecum. The guinea pigs that performed the cecotrophy showed pH values of the stomach contents of 1.53 and of the blind of 6.63. The prevention of cecotrophy mainly results in a reduction of the stomach contents, associated to increases in pH at the cecal level and a generalized enteropathy in the animals.
