| Čoahkkáigeassu: | Reading skills involve a series of abilities that allow the reader to understand and interpret the texts he/she reads. The aim of this research was to analyse the relationship between the level of the basic cognitive processes of attention and memory and reading comprehension in students in the first cycle of the communication degree, period 2023-2024. It was a quantitative, descriptive, correlational and cross-sectional study with a non-experimental design. The d2 test was applied to measure attention, the RIAS scale (memory subscale) and the ICLAU to measure reading comprehension in university students, in 27 students. The predominant results in the sample evaluated were that 81.5% showed a low level of attention and 77.8% showed low levels of memory. 40.7% reached medium levels in reading comprehension and 33.3% low levels. The correlation established reached a Kendall's Tau-b value of .182, with attention, while that with memory obtained a Kendall's Tau-b value of .058, values that were placed on the Pearson's linear correlation coefficient assessment scale, reaching a statistically significant value in a range of positive correlation of medium magnitude with attention and weak magnitude with memory. It is concluded that there is a positive correlation of medium and weak magnitude between the cognitive processes of attention and memory and reading comprehension. |
