Περίληψη:The Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease is a progressive and potentially deadly disease which can cause dyspnea and predisposes to suffer exacerbations and serious illnesses. The antecedence of tobacco consumption, exposition to wood smoke, environmental pollution, and other factors are the elements that make this disease grow with complications that extend the stay and elevate mortality. Based on these considerations, it was proposed to determine the main factors associated with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease in patients older than 50 years who come to the "Hospital General Isidro Ayora", in the period June-December 2018. The variables used were age, sex, place of residence, initial activity and associated factors. Through a descriptive cross-sectional design. The universe of study corresponds to all the patients who came to the internal medicine service with a diagnosis of COPD, being a total of 40 patients. Among the main results it was evident that the age group of 70-79 years (60%) predominated, the difference between both sexes was minimal, with 52.5% male and 47.5% female, with a predominance of rural residence (57 , 5%), having as initial activity being housewives (47.5%), followed by being a farmer (37.5%), and after multifactorial analysis, age, sex and exposure to wood smoke were significantly associated with pathology; concluding that the most prevalent factors for the development of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease were exposure to wood smoke, exposure to tobacco smoke, smoke from heavy transport and the history of tobacco consumption Key words: COPD, tobacco, firewood, smoke.
