Samenvatting:Leptospirosis is a frequent bacterial zoonotic disease and it is not completely diagnosed, it is caused by a bacterium of the genus Leptospira, it is extended worldwide in rural and urban areas; these diseases are associated to extreme climate changes and inadequate hygiene conditions. This study had the purpose of identifying the cases of leptospirosis, risk factors, and to establish the prevalence of the disease in the community of Guadalupe province of Zamora Chinchipe. For developing this work, a descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out. The presence of specific IgM against Leptospira spp in farmers was determined by applying the technique of Inmuno Enzymatic Essay (ELISA); applying the survey it was possible to identify the main risk factors for the disease. A total of 11 samples corresponding to 22% gave positive in the screening of Leptospira where the highest percentage of seropositivity was found in farmers aged 18-64 years with 90.9%, and the female predominance in 9 cases corresponding to 82% with. Possession of animals like dogs, rodents, water intake without proper treatment, misuse of protective clothing for farming, all these 100%, were the main risk factors which are these people exposed to leptospirosis in this parish. The common clinical manifestations that have these people were headache (72.7%), abdominal pain (63.6%) yellow eyes (63.6%) and chills (54.5%). Keywords: Leptospirosis, risk factors, IgM.
