Samenvatting:Beekeeping in Ecuador is considered an economically profitable and ecologically viable activity. It has great importance at a social, economic and ecological level, and is an alternative source of employment generation. However, it is not possible to ta- ke advantage of 100 % of the benefits offered by beekeeping because some hives do not have desirable characteristics such as high work capacity, greater flight distance, resistance, tolerance and immunity to diseases, tendency to accumulate food reser- ves, among others. To reverse this situation, it is necessary to look for alternatives, such as genetic improvement through the selection of the best hives. In the present investigation three factors of selection of Apis mellifera hives were analyzed. They worked with 24 two-story Langstroth hives, located in 6 hives of the Hoya de Loja. The hygienic behavior (CH) of each hive was evaluated using the perforated pupa technique, the varroa infestation rate (TIV) was established in the formative phase through the methodology proposed by David de Jong and the honey reserves by ob- servation Direct from the frames. of the breeding chamber. The results of the research for CH showed values ranging between 60 % and 98 %. The TIV indicated values bet- ween 1.17 % and 5.60 %. For honey reserves, results were obtained between 1 and 3 squares of honey. Therefore, the hives had a mild to high hygienic behavior, without varroasis problems and with a good capacity for honey reserves. Key words: Apis mellifera, Hygienic behavior, varroa infestation, honey reserves.
