description Antibiotic resistance represents a public health problem. The appearance of resistance to various antimicrobials has been particularly important in the case of enterobacteria, since these microorganisms are frequent cause of different types of infection, community or nosocomial. In our environment, there are no timely investigations to determine the factors associated with bacterial resistance in urinary tract infections, for this reason the Ministry of Public Health of Ecuador, establishes such patterns of bacterial resistance as a research priority. The present study is descriptive and determined the factors associated with urinary tract infections by ESBL-producing Escherichia coli, in patients admitted to the Isidro Ayora Hospital, during the June-December 2017 period. Income, of them 27.1% (n = 55) were positive for E. coli producing ESBL. An association was found between the appearance of the infection and the age of the patient, with age over 65 years being significant, with 50.9% (n = 28). The female gender was the most affected, with a total of 70.9% (n = 39). 78.2% (n = 43) had a previous history of antibiotic therapy. Regarding the presence of UTIs 12 months earlier, 85.5% (n = 47) had such a history. As conclusions, it was determined to the age over 65 years, female gender, the use of antibiotics three months prior and the presence of UTI twelve months earlier, are predisposing factors for a urinary tract infection due to Escherichia coli producing ESBL. Key Words: Risk factors, urinary tract infection, ESBL, antibiotic therapy

Key Words: Risk factors, urinary tract infection, ESBL, antibiotic therapyLa resistencia a antibióticos representa un problema de salud pública.
