| Riassunto: | The research entitled: Working memory and executive function as processes correlated to reading comprehension difficulties in 5th year EGB students attending the Educational Unit "Pio Jaramillo Alvarado" aimed to analyze the correlation between the working memory, executive function and reading comprehension difficulties. It was a qualitative-quantitative or mixed approach, correlational, cross-sectional, and non-experimental design. It contemplated a non-probabilistic sample of 31 students who were evaluated with the Banfe-2 and the CLP test. The results show that 51.61% of the sample presents a severe alteration in the working memory. Regarding the executive function, 70.97% of the sample shows a normal cognitive function. Regarding to reading comprehension, 80.6% of students were below the average, which corresponds to a low level of reading comprehension. When applying Pearson's chi-square statistical test, the relationship between reading comprehension and working memory became evident, since the following results were obtained; 13,103 of the episodic buffer; 16,809 of the visual-spatial agenda; and 16,185 of the phonological loop. These data exceeded the critical points, so the null hypothesis is rejected and the researcher's hypothesis is accepted. On the other hand, the executive function is not related to reading comprehension, since the data from the statistical test show the following scores: 3.198 for information processing; 2,583 of attentional control; 6,771 of mental flexibility; and 5,599 from goal setting. These data did not exceed the critical points, so the null hypothesis is accepted and the researcher's hypothesis is rejected. It is concluded that there is a relationship between working memory and reading comprehension since the values calculated by means of Pearson's chi-square statistical test fall in the rejection zone of the null hypothesis; and consequently, the researcher's hypothesis is accepted. The Executive functions are not related to reading comprehension since the values obtained through the aforementioned statistical test fall in the acceptance zone of the null hypothesis and consequently the researcher's hypothesis is rejected. Key words: Reading comprehension, working memory, executive functions, multicomponent model, executive control system. |
