| Тойм: | The importance of the urbanization process in the world is widely accepted, because if it is properly managed it. can contribute to economic growth, increase productivity and promote technological innovations (Henderson, 2003). However, the consequences of this phenomenon in developing countries have not been appreciated in its true magnitude, for this reason, this research work focuses on examining the impact of the urbanization process on regional per capita production for 218 cantons of Ecuador, using spatial econometric techniques. Data published by the National Institute of Statistics and Census and the Central Bank of Ecuador were compiled, the dependent variable is the regional per capita production measured by the Gross Value Added per capita and the independent variable is the urban population of each region. Due to the endogeneity between urbanization and production (Lucas, 1988 and Henderson, 2000), this was corrected using indices of specialization in manufacturing and services as instrumental variables. The results show that the increases of the urban population are positively related to the regional per capita production, likewise, starting from the statement of Tobler (1970) the spatial models showed that the production of a region depends on the production of its neighboring regions. On the other hand, spending on research and development and on training and training positively influences the production of a canton, these are necessary insofar as the knowledge acquired from this investment can be transmitted to the rest of the regions. |
