Gaia:Luis Alfredo Martínez, a committed liberal, published in 1904 his first and only novel “A la costa”, which supported the reforms of Eloy Alfaro's government. This Ecuadorian novel is representative within the migratory spectrum; however, the political role played by its author and the historicity it reflects, allow us to give it a different approach, closely related to the context in which it was produced. For this reason, the present work was developed with the purpose of analyzing the representation of the ideological and political transition of the Ecuadorian people in the protagonist of the novel. To reach this point, the political doctrines present in the work were characterized, the ideological change of Salvador Ramírez was described through his discourse, and the symbolic elements of the ideological transition at the time the work was published were compared. The research required a qualitative approach and a documentary-literary design, in addition to a critical approach that allowed to see the work from its role in the socio-cultural sphere of its time. The results yielded political doctrines characterized on the basis of Martínez's ideology, which saw conservatives as an evil for national progress. In addition, the ideological transition in the protagonist was marked by three moments: conservatism, anarchy, and liberalism; demonstrated through his discourse and the symbolic elements that accompanied him, which were constructed through a dual writing. It is concluded that the representation of the protagonist as the Ecuadorian people is deep, detailed and echoes the social memory. Likewise, its ideological change obeys the time in which the novel was published and it is totally soaked by the political inclinations of its author.
