| Samenvatting: | Nutritional status is related to food security, availability of food in quantity and quality according to the needs, the level of access to food and the biological utilization of nutrients. This argument motivated this research that focused on: To determine the nutritional status of children under 5 years of age who attended the external consultation in the University Hospital of Motupe in the period April to September 2016, seeking to identify the nutritional status through anthropometric data of weight, height and body mass index (BMI), to establish the sociodemographic factors that influence the nutritional status of the children and to know the frequency of food consumption in in the minors. The study was descriptive, qualitative and quantitative and transversal. In its execution, the technique of direct observation of the clinical histories was used as well as the application of a survey. The data was tabulated and interpreted by using simple frequency tables with the Microsoft Excel 2013 program. The results revealed that the majority of the sample studied corresponded to an adequate nutritional status in 71%; associated to the factors: economic income, type of residence, schooling, marital status and occupation of the mother, did not show statistically significant differences with the nutritional status and the average weekly food intake, the most frequent in this study was in order of importance 60% fat, 47.7% carbohydrates, 46.7% vitamins and minerals and 40% proteins.
