Description
Summary:Toxoplasma gondii represents a serious problem in the health of cats and due to the zoonotic potential of the disease arouses great interest. The study of the protozoan, its etiological agent and the possibility of having a fast and reliable diagnosis, as represented by the rapid immunochromatography tests, would allow better care and prevention of the disease, both in pets and in their owners. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii in domestic cats treated at the Vivet, Colas y Bigotes and Teckelvet Veterinary Clinics in the city of Loja. The Toxoplasma gondii Antibody Ab (Tg Ab) ® test was considered for the diagnosis, using blood samples from 50 feline patients, the blood extraction site was the cephalic vein. The variables were considered as associated factors: age, body condition, sex and stay free of stay. For the statistical analysis, Fisher's Exact Test was used, considering p values equal to or less than 0.05, as statistically significant. The results achieved indicate 14% of cats were positive for the presence of T. gondii; the stay variable free of stay, which includes pets that stay inside and outside the house (mixed stay), was identified as the only risk factor (p-value= 0.013), determining that the risk of presenting T. gondii, is 30 times more in cats that are outside the house in relation to cats that are indoors (OR=30). Key words: Toxoplasmosis, immunochromatography, zoonoses, felines.
