| Zusammenfassung: | Self-prescription continues to be one of the leading public health and one of the main bacterial resistance problems in the under-fives. The purpose of this research was to determinate the relationship between pneumonia and the administration of over-the counter drugs in 0-5 years of age pediatric patients hospitalized in the pediatric department of the Isidro Ayora Regional Hospital, in addition to inquiring about the sources of obtaining medication, determining the most administered drugs within in this problem group, recognizing the reasons for consultation and establishing the relationship between the administration of over-the-counter medicinal products and the place of the residence of the patients. It was a cross-sectional descriptive case study. For this particular survey the universe and the sample number were 138 patients who satisfied the eligibility criterion. To collecting such information, was performed a comprehensive examination of the medical records of hospitalized patients with a pneumonia diagnosis and then the findings were registered in a complied spreadsheet for the same patients. The data collected was incorporated into a computer support were analyzed, and it was determined that 85.47% of pediatric patients before going to the emergency service received treatment in other health entities, and it was noteworthy that 61.54% had received pre-admission antibiotics.
