Description
Summary:The objective of this research is to examine the causal relationship that exists among poverty and regional entrepreneurship in Ecuador using spatial regression methodology and data for 2010. Cross-sectional data from the National Economic Census is obtained by the Instituto Nacional de Estadísticas y Censos (INEC). The dependent variable is poverty measured by Necesidades Básicas Insatisfechas (NBI) and the independent variable is entrepreneurship measured by the total economic establishments that were created in recent years. In addition, two entrepreneurship groups are carried out, the first one is 5 years from the 2006-2010 period and the second group is 10 years, which belongs to the 2001–2010 period. The main results show that when entrepreneurship increases by 1%, poverty will decrease by -0.295 and -0.290, respectively. The econometric model includes a set of control variables, which indicate that entrepreneurship loses statistical significance, which suggests that there are other factors that explain regional poverty, particularly human capital. Finally, spatial econometrics techniques confirm the spatial dependence of poverty. A public policy implication derived from the results found is that the State must invest more in education to reduce poverty levels in the poorest cantons
