Özet:The current research study aims to characterize the physical and mechanical properties of clays in the Payama, San Antonio Alto, San Antonio Bajo, and Sapul sectors of the Chuquiribamba parish. The primary objective is to determine the properties of these clays and guide their potential applications, particularly in agricultural and livestock construction. Fieldwork and laboratory analyses were conducted for this purpose. Physical and mechanical tests were performed on eight samples, each with five repetitions, to ensure highly reliable results. The tests included particle size analysis through washing, sieving, and sedimentation; Atterberg and shrinkage limits; and compaction tests using the Standard Proctor and Modified Proctor methods, all carried out according to NTE-INEN and AASHTO-ASTM standards. Based on the laboratory test results, data tabulation was performed, and the soils were classified using the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS) and the AASHTO system. According to the USCS classification, the soils from the four studied sectors were identified as MH and ML, corresponding to high-plasticity elastic silts and low-plasticity clayey silts, respectively. According to the AASHTO system, the soils belong to the A-7-5 group, identified as clayey soils. The analysis of the obtained data indicates that the soils with the highest clay content are found in the San Antonio Alto, San Antonio Bajo, and Sapul sectors. Given that the clay activity of the studied soils is relatively low, their predominant composition is kaolinite, which enhances their applicability in certain construction materials for rural areas.
