HUELLA ECOLÓGICA, CRECIMIENTO ECONÓMICO Y CONSUMO DE ENERGÍA: UN ANÁLISIS DE COINTEGRACIÓN PARA EL ECUADOR, PERIODO 1970-2016”

The objective of this research is to examine the effect of economic growth and energy consumption on the ecological footprint in Ecuador. This relationship is estimated in a country with high dependence on the primary sector and a low level of industry participation in GDP. Adequately time series data of the World Development Indicators, prepared by the World Bank (2017), corresponding to the period 1970-2016. The permitted results conclude that the hypothesis of the Kuznets Environmental Curve (CAK) in the form of U-inverted, is fulfilled for the Ecuadorian case between the variables ecological footprint and economic growth, and is in the growing stretch of the curve, near of reaching its point of return. However, when the energy consumption variable is included, the CAK is not valid. Through the VAR methodology and Johansen cointegration, the results describe a stable long-term relationship between the ecological footprint and economic growth variables, however the variable energy consumption does not satisfy the long-term stability conditions. Using the VEC methodology, the results report a stable short-term relationship between the variables. In addition, unidirectional causality was found, ranging from economic growth to energy consumption. One possible implication of economic policy derived from this research is to prioritize the expansion and efficient use of renewable energy matrices, so that GDP can increase without deteriorating the environment. In addition, considering the empirical evidence developed, Ecuador should turn its attention to a conservative model in the face of its current extractivist model, opting for mechanisms that help manage the economic growth process without compromising the environment.
