Evaluación del bienestar animal en el Centro de Control Municipal de Fauna Urbana de Loja

Animal welfare seeks a dignified life for animals, both physically and mentally, so we must guarantee safe environments that meet all their needs. Most shelters for rescued animals do not meet all the welfare criteria, and the condition of the animals is unknown; therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the animal welfare of the Loja Municipal Urban Fauna Control Center, we analyzed Indirect indicators for management; and resources used on the animals through a test and a checklist respectively, and direct ones through animal-based parameters, we studied the visual analog scale (VAS) to measure barking intensity and emotional states in 30 canines, we showed that the results of the evaluation, the shelter had shortcomings in management: low adoption rate, high rate of mortality and return of dogs, lack of rehabilitation and training. Concerning resources, we evidenced that there are problems in the thermal comfort and rest of the animals, and in the individual observation, abnormal behaviors, and lameness problems, we found inadequate body condition and lack of hygiene. We determined that the Loja Municipal Urban Fauna Control Center is functional, but there are some deficiencies in management, available resources, and individual animal handling. We recommended carrying out animal welfare evaluations using other protocols and indicators to know the current status of the animals.
