Most shelters for rescued animals do not meet all the welfare criteria, and the condition of the animals is unknown; therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the animal welfare of the Loja Municipal Urban Fauna Control Center, we analyzed Indirect indicators for management; and resources used on the animals through a test and a checklist respectively, and direct ones through animal-based parameters, we studied the visual analog scale (VAS) to measure barking intensity and emotional states in 30 canines, we showed that the results of the evaluation, the shelter had shortcomings in management: low adoption rate, high rate of mortality and return of dogs, lack of rehabilitation and training. Concerning resources, we evidenced that there are problems in the thermal comfort and rest of the animals, and in the individual observation, abnormal behaviors, and lameness problems, we found inadequate body condition and lack of hygiene. We determined that the Loja Municipal Urban Fauna Control Center is functional, but there are some deficiencies in management, available resources, and individual animal handling. We recommended carrying out animal welfare evaluations using other protocols and indicators to know the current status of the animals. Keywords: Animal welfare, canines, Shelter Quality protocol, management, resourcesEl bienestar animal busca una vida digna a los animales tanto en su aspecto físico como en el mental, por lo que se deben garantizar entornos seguros que satisfagan todas sus necesidades. La mayoría de refugios de acogida para animales rescatados no cumplen con todos los criterios de bienestar y además se desconoce el estado de los animales; por lo tanto, en este estudio se planteó evaluar el bienestar animal del Centro de Control Municipal de Fauna Urbana de Loja. Se analizaron indicadores indirectos para la gestión y para los recursos utilizados en los animales mediante un test y una lista de verificación respectivamente, y directos a través de parámetros basados en el animal, la escala analógica visual (VAS) para medir la intensidad de ladridos y los estados emocionales y se estudiaron 30 caninos. Los resultados de la evaluación mostraron que el refugio presentó carencias en la gestión: baja tasa de adopción, alta tasa de mortalidad y devolución de perros, falta de rehabilitación y entrenamiento. En relación a los recursos se evidenció que existen problemas en el confort térmico y descanso de los animales y en la observación individual se encontraron comportamientos anormales, problemas de cojera, condición corporal inadecuada y falta de higiene. Se determinó que el Centro de Control municipal de Fauna urbana de Loja, es funcional, pero presenta algunas deficiencias en la gestión, en los recursos disponibles y el manejo individual hacia los animales. Se recomienda realizar evaluaciones de B.A aplicando otros protocolos e indicadores para conocer el estado real de los animales.
