Crynodeb:Nowadays there are few studies focused on functional autonomy, especially when dealing with people with disabilities; some results of these studies agree that there are difficulties in promoting this autonomy, mainly in the family context and to the same person with disability. Functional autonomy goes beyond learning to perform activities of daily living correctly and developing social skills that enable people to function in society. That is the reason for the need to carry out this research, which objective is to establish the relationship of the functional autonomy of people with disabilities and family functionality. It is a descriptive, relational cross-sectional study; which allowed to measure different variables, in a specific form, the familiar functionality with the familiar APGAR test and the functional autonomy in people with disability through the Barthel test. Data was analyzed using the statistical program SPSS version 16. This study showed that the functional autonomy of people with disabilities is related and influences the functionality of their families, as well as socioeconomic status and demographic factors; moreover, the results served to raise awareness on the need to develop comprehensive studies on this problem and to generate practical applications where it can best implement the policies of the Ministry of Public Health and Ministry of Economic and Social Inclusion, in the specific programs of the patients with disabilities. Key words: Dependence, family APGAR, Barthel index, independence.
