Gaia:The Family planning and contraceptive practices allow the identification and modification of risk factors that compromise maternal and neonatal health. The present investigative work is based on a quantitative, qualitative, descriptive and analytical design, with the objective of investigating the levels of knowledge and practices on family planning in indigenous women of fertile age in the Lagunas, Quisquinchir and Ñamarin belonging to the Saraguro canton of the city of Loja during the period February-July 2016. Specifically with the objective of identifying the level of knowledge about family planning in indigenous women of fertile age, determine which is the most used method of contraception by indigenous women in fertile age and establish the cause of the abandonment of family planning in indigenous women of fertile age. The present investigation is done to a sample of 166 indigenous women of fertile age, obtained from a universe of 910 indigenous women between 12 and 40 years willing to participate in the study, excluding those under 12 and over 49 years, those that aren’t willing to participate in the study, mestizo women and those who don’t belong to the communities studied, also is established through a previously validated survey, where the results indicated that: the 62% know little about family planning, 20% nothing and 18% enough. Among the most used contraceptive methods are: Male condom with 12%, subdermal implant for 3 years with 11%, Monthly injection 10%. Among the most relevant causes of abandonment are: The couple is in disagreement 24%, the lack of information 23%, the little availability of time 18%. Therefore, there is a need for timely information on the subject; to join in with a plan, which allows adopting attitudes, healthy and safe practices on sexual and reproductive health, through the implementation of an educational guide, as a tool for learning about family and as an important contribution of the National University of Loja.
