| Summary: | Halitosis is the unpleasant odor emanating from the oral cavity in a person; it is a condition of multifactorial etiology, but its main cause is estimated of oral origin between 80% and 90%. The increase in VSC levels is a challenge since there is no straightforward approach to the reason for the incidence of VSC in the appearance of halitosis. For this reason, the present literature review aims to determine the relationship of VSC in the development of halitosis, to analyze the effects of gingival and periodontal disease in the increase of sulfur compounds, to establish which VSC increase the appearance of halitosis, and to study which bacteria are responsible for the production of VSC. It is a descriptive bibliographic research study through which information was collected and analyzed in different databases that included a sample of 24 scientific articles to meet the proposed objectives and thus define the relationship of the increase in the levels of VSC in halitosis. From the analysis, we determined that there is a relationship between VSC and the appearance of halitosis in 100%, we also determined that the VSC that occur more frequently in periodontal diseases are CH3SH and H2S, we also detected that predominantly the appearance of halitosis is triggered by VSC that include CH3SH, H2S y CH3SCH3 and are generated by Gram-negative bacteria |
