Descripció
Sumari:Phonological awareness is the ability to become aware that written words are composed of letters that are transformed into sounds. It also entails recognizing, identifying, reflecting, and consciously using the sounds and segments that constitute speech. This research study aimed at determining how musical expression improves the phonological awareness of preschool children at José Ingenieros Elementary School in the city of Loja, period 2022-2023. The researchers used a mixed approach and a quasi-experimental design with a descriptive scope by means of the inductive-deductive and analytical-synthetic methods to develop the research properly. Furthermore, the observation technique, a rating scale, and the test to evaluate phonological knowledge (PECO - for its acronym in Spanish) were administered to a population of 19 preschool children. The results showed that 68% were at a very low level and none at a high level of phonological awareness. Such results reflected difficulties in the syllabic and phonemic dimensions when working on identification and omission tasks, considering the position where the syllable operates, be it at the beginning, middle or end. To address the identified problem, a guide of activities called "The sweet listening of sounds in children's learning" based on musical expression was applied, which caused a decrease of 27% in the low level and increasing 73% in the high level. The finding allowed the researcher to conclude that musical expression turned out to be a quite useful resource to improve the development of phonological awareness, thus enhancing children’s oral expression and communication.
