Achoimre:The economic valuation of ecosystem services is an important planning and management tool. The objective of this research was to estimate the willingness to pay (WTP) for conserving urban trees in the northern sector of the city of Loja, which provides ecosystem services. Likewise, it was determined the socioeconomic characteristics of the residents of the north of the city of Loja that influence the payment decision for the conservation of urban trees were determined. To achieve this objective, the contingent valuation methodology (CVM) was applied using the probabilistic probit model. In the northern sector of Loja, 360 interviews were conducted with heads of households in the urban parishes of El Sagrario, Sucre and El Valle. To validate this model, the Hosmer- Lemeshow goodness-of-fit test was used with 80 % confidence. Based on the results, the heads of household in the northern sector of Loja were significantly more willing to pay 2.4 dollars per month (median) for the conservation of urban trees. Socioeconomic factors: occupation, dependents, housing tenure and distance were significant influences on their decision to pay. Therefore, it can be concluded that socioeconomic variables like occupation and dependents play an important role in determining whether or not to pay for the conservation of natural resources. Loja's green areas can be planned and conserved with the information generated by this research.
