Summary:Minimally invasive dentistry is based on a philosophy that mixes the prevention, remineralization, placement, and replacement restorations with minimal intervention that aims at the treatment with the least invasive surgical approach, removing as little healthy tissue as possible. The present research aims to recognize minimal intervention treatment options for dental cavities versus conventional techniques. Regarding the literature review, a review of the scientific literature on minimally invasive dentistry in cariology was conducted through search engines and platforms such as SciELO, Pubmed, and Medline. Likewise, articles in both English and Spanish were included. The present research is documentary type based on the compilation of bibliographic information on minimally invasive dentistry and traditional dentistry in treatments for dental cavities available in different digital database platforms such as Pubmed Medline, Google Scholar, Elsevier, SciELO, and books. The conclusions pointed out that the minimally invasive dentistry techniques analyzed have significant advantages in tooth decay treatment since they use prevention, control, and less aggressive treatments. Indeed, its purpose is to respect the original structures as much as possible. Furthermore, it implies having knowledge, attitudes, techniques, and skills
