Riesgo de desarrollar diabetes mellitus tipo 2 en la población de la parroquia Yangana

Diabetes constitutes a great challenge for public health due to its impact on quality of life and the high costs for its care, treatment, loss of productivity due to disability and premature mortality. This research was carried out in the Yangana parish of the Loja canton 2018 –2019, with the purpose of evaluating the risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus according to sex, identifying the main modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors related to the development of diabetes; and, relate the main risk factors to the category according to the FINDRISK Score. A descriptive study with a quantitative approach was carried out, with a sample of 274 people living in the parish. Obtaining as results: the sex with the highest risk of developing diabetes mellitus is female 9.1 % high risk (n = 25). The main modifiable risk factors are high waist circumference 71.5 % (n = 196), high BMI 69.3 % (n = 190), and poor diet 54.4 % (n = 149); unmodifiable factors were age > 45 years 43.8 % (n = 120) and family history of diabetes 41.6 % (n =114). The risk factors related to a high category according to the FINDRISK Score are high waist circumference 11.68 % (n = 32), high BMI 10.58 % (n = 29) and age > 45 years 9.49 % (n = 26). It is concluded that modifiable risk factors such as high BMI and poor diet are related to a high risk of developing diabetes mellitus. Key words: preventive health, FINDRISK, community.
