Summary:The postpartum hemorrhage is one of the most feared obstetric complications and is one of the three leading causes of maternal mortality in the world (H. Karlsson, C. Pérez Sanz, 2013). Therefore, the present research was developed in order to determine the prevalence and risk factors associated to the Postpartum Hemorrhage during the immediate puerperium in pregnant women attended at the service of Gynecology and Obstetrics at Isidro Ayora Regional Hospital in Loja city, period March- August 2015. To develop this research a descriptive, prospective and transversal study was made at “Isidro Ayora Regional hospital”, in which were attended a total of 763 deliveries and 572 Cesareans, of which 27 cases presented postpartum hemorrhage which represents a prevalence of 2%. As a main conclusion was found, the multiparity, uterine overdistention, hypertensive disorders of pregnancy among the main factors of antepartum risk and medio-lateral episiotomy, induction of labor, prolonged labor as risk factors of hemorrhage during the first and second period. It is recommended that pregnant women carry monthly checks during all the gestation stage in order to reach prevent and reduce maternal death from postpartum hemorrhage through active management of the third stage of labor.
