| Izvleček: | Environmental pollution is largely related to economic activities such as agricultural and industrial production and energy consumption. Fossil fuels continue to be the backbone of the global energy system, the level of pollution released into the atmosphere continues to increase significantly. In Ecuador, CO2 emissions were 40,54 million tons, derived from the burning of fossil fuels for the production of energy and cement, in addition to this, an average person emitted a total of 2,33 tons C02 / year (Our World in Data, 2019). For this reason, the general objective of this research was to examine the relationship between environmental pollution and non-renewable energy consumption and implementation of energy efficiency policies in Ecuador, through an econometric study, with the purpose of analyzing the dynamics of short and long-term between the variables during the period 1970-2015. The data were obtained from the World Development Indicators (2020) and time series cointegration techniques were used, among them, Vector Autoregressive (VAR), Error Correction (VEC) models and the Granger causality test. According to the results, the presence of a short-term and long-term equilibrium relationship between non-renewable energy consumption and environmental pollution was verified; Furthermore, a causal relationship was evidenced between the study variables. Therefore, policies should be directed to the use of energy from renewable sources, because it facilitates not only the process of generating green energy, but also contributes to sustainable economic growth. |
