| Summary: | Shift work is becoming increasingly common in working days in both public and private companies, due to the growing demand for the different kind of services; this type of work brings out several social and health implications such as increased risk of mood disorders, depression, Burnout Syndrome, increased cardiovascular and metabolic risk, especially sleep disturbances because of the disruption of an individual's biological clock. Within this framework, the present study was based on a quantitative, descriptive study and it includes a sample size of 97 workers that met the inclusion criteria; rotating shifts at the ECU 911 Integrated Public Safety Systems in Loja. The data collection instruments were applied to them. The results obtained determined that the majority of the population studied belonging to the economically active population (EAP), were mostly male 77%, compared to 23% female, married: 67% male and 73% female, and lived in urban areas. In terms of sleep quality, it was established that most of the participants need medical attention and treatment because of their sleeping problems; about half of the population has normal sleepiness and a smaller amount experiments excessive sleepiness. Finally, it is considered that there is a relationship between sleep quality and the presence of daytime sleepiness. Hence, a good sleep quality equals to less drowsiness and on the contrary poor sleep quality increases the chances of daytime sleepiness. |
