Čoahkkáigeassu:This research is of great importance to understand the reality of domestic violence against older adults in the San Pedro Claver Foundation. The results obtained make it possible to raise awareness, sensitize society and contribute to the development of effective strategies to prevent, combat and protect the elderly from this type of violence. Domestic violence against older adults is a major social and public health problem, affecting millions of people around the world. The objective of this research is to study the incidence and characteristics of this type of violence in the San Pedro Claver Foundation, located in Solanda, Quito, Ecuador. To this end, a qualitative approach was employed, using techniques such as participant observation, in-depth interviews and focus groups, allowing for the collection of valuable information on the experiences and perspectives of older adult victims of domestic violence at the center. The research was conducted at the San Pedro Claver Foundation during the first semester of the year 2024. Favorable approval was obtained from the institution and the Research Committee of the National University of Loja. For data collection, informed consent was applied to the older adults who participated in the study, guaranteeing respect for their integrity and well-being. The research findings reveal that domestic violence against older adults at Fundación San Pedro Claver is a worrisome reality. Older adults are victims of various types of violence, including: Physical mistreatment: hitting, pushing, pinching, burning or deprivation of food. Psychological abuse: insults, threats, humiliation or isolation. Emotional abuse: disqualifications, constant criticism, excessive control or manipulation. Financial abuse: theft of money, forgery of checks or pressure to deliver goods. Domestic violence has a significant and negative impact on the physical and mental health of older adults, including: Physical damage: injury, chronic pain, illness or even death. v Psychological impairment: depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, low self-esteem or social isolation. Loss of autonomy: excessive dependence on caregivers, limited mobility or inability to make decisions. The present investigation confirms the existence of a serious problem of domestic violence against older adults in the San Pedro Claver Foundation. It is necessary to take urgent measures to prevent and combat this type of violence, protecting the rights and well-being of the elderly. According to data from the Ministry of Economic and Social Inclusion (MIES 2022) of Ecuador, 44% of older adults have been victims of some type of violence, whether physical, psychological, sexual, economic or abandonment. Of this 44%: 26% have suffered economic violence: this includes control of money or assets, deprivation of basic resources or financial exploitation. 22% have experienced psychological violence: Psychological abuse, social isolation, neglect or abandonment. 22% have been victims of physical violence: Physical assaults such as hitting, shoving, pinching, shaking or even homicide. 20% have been victims of sexual violence: sexual abuse or rape. 10% have been victims of violence due to negligence: Lack of medical care, hygiene or adequate food. It is important to note that: These percentages correspond to official data, but it is estimated that the real figure could be higher. Many elderly people do not report abuse due to fear, shame or lack of knowledge of their rights. Older women are the most affected by gender violence. A study by (INEC 2021) revealed that 64.9% of older women have suffered some type of gender-based violence, compared to 57.4% of older men. vi Gender-based violence against older people has serious consequences for their physical and mental health. It can lead to physical injuries, psychological disorders, social isolation and economic problems.
