Among the factors that originate this phenomenon are immersed: economic growth and population density. In this context, for the development of the present study, CO2 emissions were used as the dependent variable and the per capita gross domestic product (GDPP) and population density as independent variables. In addition, we worked with a combination of bases, one theoretical and the other empirical. The development of this work is justified by the limited number of studies that relate population density and CO2 emissions. Therefore, the objective of this research is to examine the incidence of economic growth and population density on CO2 emissions globally and by income levels, during the period 1961-2015; through an econometric study using cointegration and causality techniques with panel data, with the purpose of proposing policies to reduce environmental damage. The results showed that, globally and by income levels, the variables increased over time, maintaining a positive trend, and correlation was also found. They also indicated short-term and long-term equilibrium between variables; and the forcefulness of the cointegration vector force. In addition, there was unidirectional and bidirectional causality between the variables. These results can help governments and international entities to formulate, implement and monitor strict economic, population and environmental policies, aimed at reducing environmental pollution and achieving sustainable and sustainable economic development.
