Summary:Corruption over time has become a challenge for the economies of the countries, however, there is very little empirical evidence on its impact on economic growth. According to the World Bank (World Bank, 2018) each year the cost of corruption is equivalent to approximately 5% of the world product, which is equivalent to 2.5 trillion dollars. In this context, the objective of the research is to examine the effect of economic growth on corruption in 18 Latin American countries during 1995-2017. Using panel data from the Corruption Perceptions Index (2021), the World Bank (2020), and the World Income Inequality Database (WIID, 2020). The methodology used are cointegration techniques and threshold regressions. The threshold used is economic growth. Likewise, we include control variables related to corruption in the countries analyzed. Our results show that, within Latin America, the 18 countries have a non-linear relationship in the corruption perception index. In addition, it was obtained that there is cointegration in the variables in the long term. Which means in the long term, if the authorities managed to establish rigorous policies, they can cause the index to decrease. One possible policy implication from the current study is that the judicial system is strengthened so that it can prosecute and sanction officials for lack of transparency in their actions.
