Summary:This work consists of the design and construction of a wind turbine of vertical shaft for coupling to a generator of linear displacement to a power rating of 100W and thus small consumption away from the mains electricity supply. It is worth mentioning that this model of wind turbine is the first prototype in developing the career of electromechanical engineering from the National University of Loja. This thesis is divided into the following chapters. -Chapter I-gives an overview of the world's wind power generation where greater emphasis to horizontal axis wind turbines, their advantages and disadvantages. -Chapter II-shows the different types of rotors of vertical kinds of rotors that exist, the advantages and disadvantages of vertical axis wind turbines, control systems, as also the types of generators and their applications. -Chapter III-deals with the theoretical contents, which serve as foundations for the design and construction of a vertical axis wind turbine. -Chapter IV.-is the wind turbine design calculations. -Chapter V-shows the construction and testing of the machine. Technical description. The developed wind mill is the Darrieus type with a diameter of 1.5 m, with a height of 3m, it is a propeller. Within the construction phase included local technology held stands in the bottom of the machine for fastening to the shaft, both top, central as well as to avoid possible fractures in the blades. Added a Savonius rotor in order to help the starting of the machine. In the upper part of the machine is an Apple with three holes to place the templates and at the bottom is a disk suitable for the transformation of the circular motion to linear, which allows a maximum of 8cm race. Evaluated it is functionally in the sector of the via Zamora to the height of San Ramon since in the sector intended for the wind advantage which is the UNL does not count with the necessary wind to the functioning of the machine speed and therefore it was not possible to perform the corresponding tests. With the completion of this project is has been able to venture in the field of renewable energy, as in the case of wind power, is has been able to learn more about the functioning and composition of a wind turbine, which is looking for a way to contribute to society with a possible alternative for power generation.
