Description
Summary:In this research work, the growth and performance of three varieties of white floury corn (Zea mays) were analyzed under specific soil and climatic conditions in La Argelia, Loja. An experimental design was implemented formed by three treatments corresponding to criolla, chazo, and peruana varieties, with three replications for each. The planting density was set at 372 plants per hectare for each block, at 80 cm between rows and 40 cm between plants. The germination percentage was recorded at 15 days, and vegetative variables were measured every 13 days until the Vt - R1 stage. Finally, the harvest was conducted to measure yield variables. The results showed that the chazo variety achieved a germination rate of 84.56%, a height of 220.50 cm, a total of 11.7 leaves, a leaf area of 762.8 cm2, and a leaf area index of 5.1 m2. The cobs had a length of 13.5 cm, a diameter of 5.7 cm, and a weight of 188.6 g. The grain length was 1.4 cm, and the grain width was 1.5 cm. These characteristics make the chazo variety highly interesting for profitability. In conclusion, the chazo corn variety exhibited notable characteristics such as vigor and earliness throughout the crop cycle. In addition, there was no statistically significant difference between the chazo and criolla varieties; however, in terms of production, the chazo variety outperformed the peruana and criolla varieties with a yield of 89.6 qq/ha.
