| Summary: | Doing studies that allow us to estimate the fixed or stored coal in the forest ecosystems permit to provide the necessary knowledge in order to plan the handling and conservation of forests and in order to promote the payment for the given ecosystem service. The research work was done in the three conservation areas of the Socio Bosque Program in the county of Zapotillo, province of Loja, Ecuador. Nine permanent parcels of 3600 m were installed which form three study conglomerates. Two answer variables were evaluated: floristic diversity and total stored coal in the research areas. The calculated ecological parameters were: density, relative density, relative dominance, and importance value index for all the existing species, plus the diversity index of Shannon and equitability. The biomass was estimated through the use of the methodology proposed by the Forest National Evaluation (FNE) of Ecuador, and the organic coal of soil was determined in order to calculate the total stored coal in the conservation areas. Allometric equations were used which are developed for dry tropical forest and a fraction of 0.5 average of coal. The correlation between the floristic diversity and the total stored coal was done by using the Infostat program. The average richness of species reported in the research area is 30,67 species belonging to 29,33 genders and 20,58 families in 1,08 ha. Intermediate diversity values were obtained according to the equitability and Shannon indexes for the nine parcels which demonstrated to be homogeneous forests with plenty of species. The conservation areas did not present meaningful differences a = 0,05 considering the evaluating indexes. The average of total stored coal is 96,37 t C/ha, considering a difference of coal content of 19,8 t C/ha. The component with major contribution to the storing of total coal is the organic soil coal with 50,37 %. The effect of the floristic diversity on the stored coal in the conservation areas did not present any meaningful relationship in this study. However, we could notice a meaningful relationship between the total stored coal and the stored coal in the total aerial biomass for the conglomerate number two. |
