Thus, in this investigation we applied Blue intensity methodology in Cordia alliodora (Ruiz & Pav.) Oken. with scanned images in a resolution of 2400 dpi of 69 increment cores already crossdated from 19 individual. The generation of Blue intensity information was performed using specialized software called CooRecorder version 7.8, in order to verify its efficacy in broadleaved species and establish a relationship with ring width. The results showed that the method is effective in determining ring density. The software only took into account the fiber bands for the measurement and the vessels were marked white, which does not influence the measurements, it was also observed that the values with the highest reflectance are from those rings located in the sapwood area, and these values decrease as they approach the heartwood zone. The relationship of Blue intensity and Ring width, taking into account the age of the trees was high (r = 0.69) and in a chronological analysis the relationship was (r = 0.59), both relationships were made without taking into account the first and last year, because the correlation in these years was weak, possibly due to the number of samples, which in these years was lower. The results of this study were positive and encouraging, this offers possibilities for future paleoclimatic reconstructions. However, this is an initial study and further research is needed to verify the application of the method to other tropical species. Key words: Blue-intensity, Tropics, Cordia alliodora (Ruiz & Pav.) Oken., Ring density, dendrochronology“Blue-intensity” es una metodología relativamente nueva que se basa en el análisis digital de imágenes mediante un software especializado que está muy relacionado con la densidad máxima de madera en cada anillo de crecimiento. En los últimos años se ha venido aplicando a especies coníferas, para realizar estudios paleoclimáticos. Sin embargo, su aplicación en especies latifoliadas ha sido nula. Por ello, en el presente trabajo de investigación se aplicó la metodología Blue intensity en Cordia alliodora (Ruiz & Pav.) Oken. (laurel costeño) con imágenes escaneadas con una resolución de 2400 dpi en 69 núcleos de madera ya datados de 19 individuos. La generación de información de Blue intensity se realizó mediante el software CooRecorder versión 7.8, con el fin de comprobar su eficacia en especies latifoliadas y establecer una relación con el ancho de anillo. Los resultados mostraron que el método si es eficaz para determinar la densidad en anillos de crecimiento. El software solo tomó en cuenta las bandas de fibras para realizar la medición y los vasos fueron marcados de blanco, lo que no influyó en la medición. También se observó que los valores con una mayor reflectancia son de aquellos anillos ubicados en la zona de la albura del árbol, y estos valores van decreciendo conforme se acercan a la zona del duramen. La relación de Blue intensity y Ancho de anillo, tomando en cuenta la edad de los árboles fue alta (r = 0.69) y en un análisis cronológico la relación fue de (r = 0.59), ambas relaciones se realizaron sin tomar en cuenta los primeros y último año, debido que en estos años la relación fue débil, posiblemente por el número de muestras, que en estos años era menor. Con este método se pudo comprobar en Cordia alliodora (Ruiz & Pav.) Oken. que a mayor ancho de anillo menor densidad de la madera y viceversa. Los resultados de este estudio fueron positivos y alentadores que ofrecen nuevas posibilidades para la realización de futuras reconstrucciones paleoclimáticas. Sin embargo, este es un estudio inicial y se necesita continuar con más investigaciones para comprobar la aplicación del método a otras especies de árboles tropicales.
