Zusammenfassung: | In Ecuador, 23.1% of children under five years of age have chronic child malnutrition, which implies 1 071 million dollars in education, health and productivity costs. Therefore, the general objective of this research work is to evaluate the impact of Ternura Mission program on chronic child malnutrition in children under 5 years of age in Ecuador during 2019, using econometric techniques, in order to determine the importance of social aid programs in the health-wellbeing of children and to propose public policies that contribute to improve future programs. For this purpose, data from the National Health and Nutrition Survey [ENSANUT] conducted by the National Institute of Statistics and Census [INEC] were used. In this regard, a Propensity Score Matching [PSM] model was applied to evaluate the impact of the program in reducing malnutrition. It has been confirmed that the three subprograms, which include the attendance of a child to a CIBV, the care of the child by a CNH educator, and the economic transfer from the BDHV to the mothers, have a significant effect on the reduction of malnutrition. In contrast, the subprogram that provides iron powder and folic acid to pregnant women does not help mitigate the health problem. In effect, the Misión Ternura program contributes effectively to reduce the probability that Ecuadorian children under 5 years of age suffer from malnutrition. Finally, it is recommended that the competent authorities establish effective monitoring and evaluation systems to follow up on the policies and social assistance programs implemented. |
