description Disability constitutes a frequent health problem for those who suffer it because they depend on caregivers who are mainly relatives or others, and also if is added the educational process it becomes more complex, as they require constant family support, that can cause changes in structure and functionality and not all family members can cope with changes and adaptation, which can create family dysfunction, even leading to the abandonment of these people who need a family to grow and develop in society. A quantitative, observational, and cross-sectional prospective cohort search was used in the study of the Special Education Unit of The Parents Association in favor of Children and Young People of Loja N°2 (APPRONJEL in Spanish acronyms), the aim of this research project is to characterize the students, the data was collected through a survey and the Family Functionality Test (FF-SIL in Spanish acronyms). Ninety-one students met the inclusion and exclusion criteria, obtained as result that 31.87% of the participants’ age rate was from 16 to 20 years old, 69.33% were male, 50.55% were in high school, 38.46% of the students had a severe degree of disability and also the predominant disability is the intellectual one with an 87.91%. Besides, 57.03% of the participants belong to nuclear families, 43.82% of the families are functional, the 19.10% of families are dysfunctional, and 3.37% are severely dysfunctional. Finally, it was found that there was not any significant statistical relationship between family structure and functionality (p = 0.427). Keywords: family relations, disability, educational status.

Keywords: family relations, disability, educational status.La discapacidad constituye un problema de salud para quienes la padecen porque dependen del cuidado de su familia o de otras personas, y si a este cuidado se le suma el proceso educativo se vuelve más complejo, porque requiere de un apoyo familiar constante, pudiendo causar cambios en la estructura y funcionalidad y no todos los miembros de la familia pueden sobrellevar los cambios y adaptarse, también pueden crear disfuncionalidad familiar llegando incluso al abandono de estas personas que necesitan de una familia para crecer y desarrollarse en la sociedad. La presente investigación de enfoque cuantitativo, observacional, prospectivo de cohorte transversal se realizó en la Unidad de Educación Especial ciudad de Loja No. 2 APPRONJEL tuvo como objetivo: caracterizar a los estudiantes, los datos se recolectaron a través de una encuesta y aplicación del Test de funcionalidad familiar FF-SIL. Un total de 91 estudiantes cumplieron los criterios de inclusión y exclusión, obteniéndose como resultado que el 31.87% tienen una edad comprendida entre los 16 a 20 años, el 69.33% pertenece al sexo masculino, el 50.55% cursan el bachillerato, el 38.46% presentar una discapacidad grave, la discapacidad predominante es de tipo intelectual con un 87.91%; el 57.03% tienen una familia nuclear, el 43.82% tienen una familia funcional, el 19.10% son familias disfuncionales y el 3.37% son familias severamente disfuncionales. Se encontró que no existe relación estadísticamente significativa entre la estructura y funcionalidad familiar (p=0.427).
