Sumario:Menopause is a stage in the life of the woman who combines a series of events that affect their welfare. It is a stage in the female life and a physiological process, which should not be forgotten that the events surrounding this period, condition the appearance of a series of clinical manifestations that impact the quality of life of women. The research called conceptions and experiences about the menopause, It was performed in the city of Loja, in women 40-70 years of the city of Loja, is a descriptive study, which was raised as objective to characterize the conceptions and experiences around the menopause. The universe consisted of 169 women; and the sample of 50 women aged 40-70 years, the survey was used, the presentation of the data is held in tables, the analysis was based on the literature referred to in the theoretical framework and the results were obtained. Women in the study have knowledge about what is menopause, so that most defined it as a final event of menstrual bleeding, natural aging process, due to lower production of hormones that is accompanied by loss of reproductive capacity; well as natural in life. 86% know what the symptoms in menopause and these are: feeling hot, hot flashes, headaches and depression; more than half (82%) did not know the stages of menopause. It should be noted that the experiences could influence life because it is a different experience in every woman. However the majority of postmenopausal women in the study, presented vasomotor and cardiovascular symptoms being these hot flushes, sweating and headache. The vulvogenitales and urinary symptoms that menopausal women worried was vaginal dryness and urinary tract infection; most women in the postmenopausal stage reported having had depression, irritability, mood swings, low self-esteem and self-concept; more often these symptoms.
