Summary:Neonatal hyperbilirubinemia is one of the most common clinical phenomena in neonatal life. It is one of the top ten causes of morbidity in the intermediate and intensive care units of newborns. The toxicity of bilirubin responsible for jaundice necessitates the identification of neonates at risk for jaundice. The objective of this investigation was to determine hyperbilirubinemia and its complications in the Neonatology Service of the Hospital General Isidro Ayora de Loja, being a descriptive, prospective, qualitative and cross-sectional study. The sample consisted of 136 infants who met the inclusion criteria. As relevant results in this investigation it was known that the genesis of hyperbilirubinenia is multifactorial, on the other hand, 4 cases of Kernícterus were evidenced within the complications, whereas the treatment most used in the management of the pathology investigated corresponded to phototherapy, in so much so that the gestational age in which the chaos of Hyperbilirubinemia occurred most frequently was in term infants, the boys were mostly affected.
