Crynodeb:Secondary hyperparathyroidism is a common complication in patients with terminal chronic kidney disease (CKD) that has been associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Considering and estimating the frequency of this complication could help to carry out effective health interventions for its prevention, a descriptive-transversal study was performed to know the frequency of this complication among 84 patients who were receiving hemodialysis, in the hemodialysis unit of the Hospital Isidro Ayora of Loja in the year 2016. The results showed that 6 of the patients undergoing hemodialysis have secondary hyperparathyroidism; these results show a lower prevalence than that expressed by other studies. The mean age of patients with secondary hyperparathyroidism was 60 to 69 years. Six patients with secondary hyperparathyroidism also presented hyperphosphatemia, hypocalcemia and raised alkaline phosphatase according to the values expected by the K / DOQI and K / DIGO guidelines. Most of the patients with secondary hyperparathyroidism had at the time of the study between 30 and 39 months of IR (50%). In conclusion, the adequate management of patients with CKD, medication used according to timely and biochemical analyzes, the use of adequate dialysis fluids, phosphorus chelator, vitamin D analogues (calcitriol), show the low prevalence of this pathology.
