| Summary: | COVID-19 has generated a great impact on the mental health of health personnel, university students and rotating interns causing anxiety, depression and decreased on the quality of life. The purpose of this research was to apply the criteria’s DSM-5 for the diagnosis of generalized anxiety disorder, to apply the peri-traumatic distress index related to COVID-19 (CPDI) and to relate the results obtained for both variables in graduates and rotating interns in the period of April to September 2020. It had a mixed retro prospective cross-sectional approach with a sample of 105 graduates and 66 interns of the Human Medicine career, to whom the diagnostic criteria for generalized anxiety disorder of the DSM5 and the emotional impact by means of the CPDI were applied. The results were: 91.43 % (n = 96) of graduates mentioned not meeting the DSM5 criteria, and at the onset of the pandemic three months before the end of their pre-professional internship 30.47% (n = 30) showed mild psychological distress, and 1.90% (n = 2) severe distress; in interns 95.45% (n = 63) did not meet the DSM5 criteria before starting their pre-professional internship, however, during the course of their internship 19.70% (n = 13) showed mild psychological distress and 9.12% (n = 6) severe distress. The presence of psychological distress was not related to sex, but there was a relationship between those who did not meet DSM5 criteria and the subsequent development of psychological distress (p = 0.026) in graduates and (p = 0.007) interns.
