| Summary: | The present study aims to determine the 10-year risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus by applying the FINDRISK test to the inhabitants of "El Sagrario" and "El Valle" parishes of the cantonal head of Loja canton, therefore a descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out, with a sample of 379 individuals, 205 of the female gender and 174 of the male, with ages between 20 and 64 years, who were evaluated by the FINDRISK Test, which evaluated: age, body mass index, abdominal circumference, physical exercise, consumption of vegetables and fruits, use of antihypertensives, history of hyperglycemia and family history of type 2 diabetes mellitus, categorized as: low risk, slightly elevated risk, moderate risk, high risk and risk very high. The analysis of the data showed that the population surveyed presented a 25.3% risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus. Its main risk factors are: a high abdominal perimeter, a high body mass index, a family history of Type 2 diabetes Mellitus and sedentary lifestyle. It was also established that the most affected gender is the female and the most affected age is from 55 to 64 years old. These results show that the FINDRISK test is a useful tool to detect the risk of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus; individuals at risk (moderate, high and very high risk) according to the FINDRISK test should implement lifestyle-oriented measures, with a healthy diet and frequent physical exercise, in order to delay the onset of the disease.
