Riassunto:Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (SAHOS) is an undervalued respiratory condition, which epidemiology is not established in our country, for this reason it has been decided to carry out the present research study, which is of the transversal descriptive type, carried out in the parish of San Sebastian of the city of Loja, in pursuit of the overall objective of determining the risk of SAHOS and the degree of excessive daytime sleepiness, for which 370 inhabitants were assessed through the application of the STOP-Bang questionnaire and Epworth’s excessive daytime sleepiness scale. The results indicate that 63,2% (n= 234) of respondents are at low risk of SAHOS and 37% (n=136) have intermediate-high risk. 59% (n=79) of participants with intermediate-high risk were men and 64% (n=88) were between 50-60 years of age. The associated factors present in patients with intermediate-high risk were age over fifty in 63,24% (n=86), obesity in 51,47% (n=70) and history of a first grade relative affected by snoring in 41,9% (n=47). It was found that 62% of people at intermediate-high risk had excessive daytime sleepiness. It is concluded that there is a significant risk of presenting SAHOS in our population, that men are particularly predisposed and that the risk increases progressively with age. SAHOS should be considered as a major health problem and therefore its risk needs to be assessed in the population considered susceptible to planning optimal diagnostic and treatment strategies. Key Words: Sleep Apnea, Stop-Bang Questionnaire, Epworth Scale, Daytime Hypersomnolence, Obesity.
