A mixed, cross-sectional cohort approach was applied through a field investigation with a sample of 246 people. To whom a structured survey and the FINDRISC test were applied. Obtaining the following results: most of the population has a low risk of developing DM2 with 51,60%, the factors associated with developing type 2 diabetes mellitus are female with 10,6%; the age group <45 with 7,4%; the level of primary and secondary education with 7.1% respectively; work activities, household chores and personal services with 14,5%, the factor that doesn´t influence is cigarette consumption. Determining in the population, with the FINDRISC test, moderate, high and very high risk with 6.1%, 3.3% and 0.0% respectively; to present DM2 in the next 10 years. Keywords: Findrisc test, risk factors, body mass, educational level.La diabetes mellitus tipo 2 es un problema de salud pública a nivel mundial, se asocia a factores de riesgo y se caracteriza por una alteración en el metabolismo de los carbohidratos. El presente estudio tuvo como finalidad establecer el riesgo de desarrollar diabetes mellitus tipo 2; identificar el nivel de instrucción, actividad económica y consumo de cigarrillo como factores asociados; desarrollar acciones de promoción de la salud y prevención en la cabecera cantonal de Yacuambi. Se aplicó un enfoque mixto, de cohorte transversal mediante una investigación de campo con una muestra de 246 personas. A quienes se les aplicó una encuesta estructurada y el test de FINDRISC. Obteniendo los siguientes resultados: riesgo bajo en desarrollar DM2 con 51,60%, los factores asociados a desarrollar diabetes mellitus tipo 2 son el sexo femenino con 10,6%; el grupo de edad <45 con 7,4%; el nivel de instrucción primaria y secundaria con 7,1% respectivamente; las actividades laborales quehaceres domésticos y servicios personales con 14,5%, el factor que no influye es el consumo de cigarrillo. Determinando en la población, a través del test de FINDRISC riesgo moderado, alto y muy alto en 6,1%, 3,3% y 0,0% respectivamente; de presentar DM2 en los próximos 10 años.
