| Zusammenfassung: | Biosecurity measures in pig farms are essential to reduce the risk of introduction and spread of pathogens. Within this context, the implementation of specific biosecurity measures may vary depending on the type of farm and the socioeconomic conditions of the producers. This study aimed to evaluate biosecurity measures in pig farms in the province of El Oro using the scoring system Biocheck.UGentTM. An observational study was conducted through a survey applied to 55 farms. The results showed an average general biosecurity score of 45,5%, with similar levels of external biosecurity (45,5%) and internal biosecurity (45,4%). Industrial farms significantly outperformed traditional ones in aspects such as cleaning, disinfection, and disease management. However, both types of farms face significant challenges, particularly in implementing measures related to feed and water supply and disease control. Additionally, factors such as insufficient training and lack of adequate infrastructure contribute to the observed gaps. Despite progress, the implemented measures fall below international standards, increasing the risk of disease transmission. In conclusion, the study highlights the importance of internal and external biosecurity in pig farms and emphasizes the need to strengthen training programs and improve infrastructure to reduce health risks and enhance the sustainability of the pig farming sector in the region. |
