description The main objective of this research work was to improve English grammatical competence among students of ninth year “C” of basic education, afternoon session at Unidad Educativa Marieta de Veintimilla, in the city of Loja during the 2018- 2019 school year. Different methods such as: the scientific, the descriptive, the statistical, and the synthetic-analytical methods were adopted to gather, describe, process, analyze and interpret the obtained results. Likewise, tests and questionnaires were applied to thirty-one participants to diagnose students’ knowledge and to identify their perception about English grammatical competence and collaborative learning techniques. Furthermore, observation sheets and field notes were useful to record students’ progress and their attitude towards the techniques applied. Students improved their learning outcomes significantly in five grammatical aspects: subject-verb agreement, word order, interrogative questions, declarative sentences and parts of speech. In conclusion, collaborative learning techniques were effective to assist students in conveying clear ideas and giving opinions.

In conclusion, collaborative learning techniques were effective to assist students in conveying clear ideas and giving opinions.El objetivo principal de este trabajo de investigación fue mejorar la competencia gramatical del idioma inglés entre los estudiantes de noveno año “C” de educación básica, sesión de la tarde en la Unidad Educativa Marieta de Veintimilla, en la ciudad de Loja durante el año escolar 2018-2019. Se adoptaron diferentes métodos, tales como: el científico, el descriptivo, el estadístico y el método sintético-analítico para recopilar, describir, procesar, analizar e interpretar los resultados obtenidos. Del mismo modo, se aplicaron pruebas y cuestionarios a treinta y un estudiantes para diagnosticar el conocimiento de los estudiantes e identificar su percepción sobre la competencia gramatical del inglés y las técnicas de aprendizaje colaborativo. Además, las hojas de observación y las notas de campo fueron útiles para registrar el progreso de los estudiantes y su actitud hacia las técnicas aplicadas. Los estudiantes mejoraron significativamente sus resultados de aprendizaje en cinco aspectos gramaticales: acuerdo sujeto-verbo, orden de las palabras, preguntas interrogativas, oraciones declarativas y partes del discurso.
