Sažetak:This work of research, was to determine the prevalence of hypothyroidism in adults over 40 years old treated in Basic Hospital Yantzaza April 2014-April 2015. The research used was observational, retrospective, descriptive literature. As observation technique was used by documented review, for it was applied as a guide instrument data collection to 68 medical records of patients treated at the base hospital Yantzaza in the period April 2014 - April 2015. The instrument applied allowed obtain the following results: the age group with the highest prevalence are 50 to 59 years 33.82%, sex is the female predominant with 69.12%; the 92.65% corresponds to the mixed race ethnicity, 69.12% refer urban residence and 100% are in medium low socioeconomic status. The prevalence of hypothyroidism in the study period was 6.98% and the rate of hypothyroidism without goiter predominates with 54.41%. Among the predisposing factors for the development of the pathology found diabetes mellitus with 45.59%. To help improve the quality of life of patients with the disease as well as the application of preventive care in the population an action plan based the development of an educational program and activities with patients through home visits was applied. It is concluded that the prevalence of hypothyroidism is 6.98% with a predominance of females in a ratio of 2 to 1.
