Resumo:Breast self-examination is a manual exploration by means of which it allows us to detect different abnormalities or problems in breast tissue through the inspection and palpation process; considering that the purpose of the nursing staff is to promote health and prevent disease, it is essential that the level of knowledge about breast self-examination be adequate. The objective of the present investigation with a quantitative, descriptive and cross-sectional approach was to determine the level of knowledge about breast self-examination in Nursing students of the Universidad Nacional de Loja; A questionnaire of 15 multiple-choice questions was applied to 157 students from the fourth cycle, whose results indicated that, in terms of general knowledge about the breast self-examination inspection process, the appropriate level predominates with the 59.2%; and in relation to the level of knowledge about the palpation process, 67.5% obtained an adequate level of knowledge, in relation to the results obtained, an intervention plan was elaborated with the purpose of reinforcing knowledge about breast self-examination. In conclusion, the students of the Nursing career of the Universidad Nacional de Loja have an adequate level of knowledge. KEY WORDS Prevention, promotion, disease.
