description Metastrongylosis is a zoonotic disease that represents a public health threat worldwide. However, epidemiological information about this parasitosis in the province of Loja is scarce. Therefore, the objectives of this research were to identify Metastrongylus spp., determine the factors associated with metastrongylosis in slaughtered pigs from the Celica canton, and characterize the pathological anatomy of the pneumonic lesions in the studied group of animals. To achieve this, the lungs of 203 pigs were inspected for the presence of the parasite and pneumonic lesions. The parasites recovered from the post-mortem inspection were observed under an inverted microscope with magnifications of 100x and 400x. A total of 0.99% of the pigs studied tested positive for metastrongylosis, with morphology consistent with Metastrongylus apri. The affected pigs came from the Pindal canton, belonging to age groups 1 (1 to 6 months) and 2 (7 to 18 months), Landrace breed, weighing between 56 kg and 113 kg, consisting of one male and one female, respectively. Interstitial pneumonia was the most frequent lesion and was present in pigs diagnosed with metastrongylosis. The origin, age, and sex of the animals were associated with the presence of the parasite (p<0.05). It was concluded that there is a low prevalence of Metastrongylus spp. in pigs slaughtered at the Celica canton slaughterhouse and that parasitized animals are susceptible to developing interstitial pneumonia.
