| description | Vocabulary is an important component in learning and teaching of a foreign language, laying the groundwork for effective communication. This research aimed to investigate the impact of podcasts use on English vocabulary improvement among first-year high school students in a public institution in Loja during the 2022-2023 school year. To meet the proposed objective, this study included 18 first-year high school students in a public institution in Loja, Ecuador. The study used an action research design with a mixed approach, collecting quantitative data and qualitative data obtained through a pretest, posttest, questionnaire and field notes. The data collected and analyzed were presented using descriptive statistics and thematic analysis. In this study, the quantitative analysis revealed a significant increase in students' English vocabulary, with an average on the posttest (6.44) differing markedly from the average on the pretest (4.05 points). Mixed data from field notes and questionnaires highlighted positive student experiences, active participation, and motivation when podcast-based activities were integrated. Although this research showed encouraging results, it is so essential to recognize the limitations and possible challenges faced during the study. In conclusion, the study emphasizes the importance of vocabulary in language learning and teaching, as well as the positive impact of using podcasts to improve students' English vocabulary competency. Esta investigación tuvo como objetivo investigar el impacto del uso de podcasts en el mejoramiento del vocabulario en inglés entre estudiantes de primer año de bachillerato de una institución pública de Loja durante el año lectivo 2022-2023. Para cumplir con el objetivo propuesto, este estudio incluyó a 18 estudiantes de primer año de bachillerato de una institución pública de Loja, Ecuador. El estudio utilizó un diseño de investigación acción con un enfoque mixto, recolectando datos cuantitativos y datos cualitativos obtenidos a través de un pretest, postest, cuestionario y notas de campo. Los datos recogidos y analizados se presentaron mediante estadística descriptiva y análisis temático. En este estudio, el análisis cuantitativo reveló un aumento significativo del vocabulario de inglés de los alumnos, con una media en el postest (6,44) que difería notablemente de la media en el pretest (4,05 puntos). Los datos mixtos de las notas de campo y los cuestionarios destacaron las experiencias positivas de los estudiantes, su participación activa y su motivación cuando se integraron actividades basadas en podcasts. Aunque esta investigación mostró resultados alentadores, es tan esencial reconocer las limitaciones y los posibles retos a los que se enfrentó durante el estudio. En conclusión, el estudio subraya la importancia del vocabulario en el aprendizaje y la enseñanza de idiomas, así como el impacto positivo del uso de podcasts para mejorar la competencia de vocabulario en inglés de los estudiantes.
